Ashton Asks...
Do you think that today it is better for actors to start in live theatre as opposed to film or should they simply "go for it" . Currently i'm in school getting a b.a. in theatre so my question is what would you suggest. Making the move for film work or sticking with the stage.
also do you think that right now most of the mainstream roles for native actors are strictly period pieces nad what can be done about it?

Hi Ashton, let me start by saying the good news is there are no rules the bad news is there are no rules, when it comes to how an actor makes it in Hollywood. Now it helps for one to come out of an acting college and land a role in Lord of the Rings as Orlando did but that is more about luck than talent. I have known British actors who were masters at their craft and could recite Shakespeare backwards if needed but they also knew they may never work in Hollywood. A film actor is really different than stage or even TV. There are movie stars and than there are actors who support them in many of their films. I find American Movie Stars play themselves and don't really become the characters they are playing, but that is what their audience wants to see.. them... not some other person. I would listen to your heart. What do you want to be? I always knew I wanted to work on film and even though I did some theater in Europe, I did not have the same passion I have for film. I love the fact I get to create magic and I only have so many takes to get it right. I thrive on the pressure and do not like to repeat myself again and again, where in theater you have to create that magic every night sometimes twice a day! I find theater is a great training ground but to be good at films you have to do films. Yes, many of the Indian roles are period but it is up to the actor not to just portray one type of role. I come from a mixed background but last year I passed on several Indian roles because I want to do more with myself as I have done in the past, so the choice is always with you. Don't think too far ahead. Just work hard to improve your craft and remember as an actors if you stand out in a play, it could get you that film job you are looking for. You never know who is watching. The Rock was found from a different type of stage but he is a movie star now. LOL. Also try to find the right team to guide you, a good manager or agent can open up many doors. I wish you a happy new year and the best of luck.

Much wisdom from our gifted friend as always...
Passion seems to be the key to being successful at your craft...really loving what you do. Most of us miss that and end up regretting the time we spent pursuing "things" that are not the "true thing" in our hearts.
Thanks Jay for the reminder...
Peace,
Carol
