May 21, 07 - 10:23 PM Coming of Age.
This past week I had the pleasure of witnessing an ancient and sacred ritual. The "Puberty Ceremony" as it was known, is a 4 day feast that celebrates a young ladies passage into womenhood. Twyla Rayne Ahidley Enjady is an Apache princess in my eyes. She's a direct descendent of Cochise and Naiche, his eldest son. The ceremony was held at white Tail, a mountainous area ( over 9000, feet ) high up the wooded hills of White Tail Forest that is the home of bears, eagles, cougars and Elks. It was the settlement the government gave to the Chiricahua Apaches, who were welcomed to the area by the Mescalero Apaches, on their return after 28 years of captivity. I was greeted with so much warmth and love by Chales & Elbys Hugar and her family who always make me feel as one with them. The sacred ceremony reminded me how important it is to awaken the young mind of the fact that as they reach adulthood, it is a responsibility and they must know they are vital and valuable to the tribe. It was a magical time as I slept in a teepee every night and lived my days traditionally meeting the people and helping out where I could. I listened to elders and danced around the massive fire beneath the star-studded skies. The Crown Dancers kept the bad spirits at bay as I heard ancient songs that re-created the World, from top of the mountains, to the bottom of the oceans. And all the creatures that roam this Earth from the birds of the sky to the bugs that crawl the underworld. All done in hypnotic songs, that the four medicine men chanted all night long. Twyla looked so beautiful as she danced the night away in her sacred lodge and I wish her a bright and happy future. She is a life giver now and a vital member of the Apache Nation. I like to thank Debi for all her help and Jerry for making my visit so special.

Jay, what a wonderful experience and what a blessing that some cultures are still doing the things they did in the past. We should never forget where we come from so it's refreshing when one keep the traditions or at least some of the traditions passed down from generations. I'm glad you got a chance to be a part of that and for sharing with us. Be blessed.

GLOOM WARNING
Not to spoil anyone's good mood but your report comes at a good time too as the past few days have been overshadowed by the latest news of a young girl being stoned to death just for being seen in the company of a man of the (in someone's mind) "wrong" faith. Apart from the shock and outrage at this particular incident it seems to have made quite a few people wonder if not despair about what might seem like a general misogynistic state of the world...
For some of the discussion:

GLOOM OUT
That said, it's good to be reminded that there were and are cultures and occasions that embrace and celebrate the feminine...
"The sacred ceremony reminded me, how important it is to awaken the young mind of the fact, that as they reach adult hood, it is a responsibility and they must know they are vital and valuable to the tribe."
Indeed, it seems common to all the old North American cultures (and I'm applauding them for that) that while the good of the community as a whole is a priority they still hold the individual in high regard and encourage each and every one to discover and develop whatever particular abilities or skills they might have and with their individuality contribute to the benefit of all.
I guess a lot of the problems with violence, addictions etc. we perceive especially in young people today probably stem from people lacking a real sense of responsibility and worth both towards/within themselves and as part of the society they live in.
Excuse my rant, I didn't mean to be a downer after such an uplifting post...(and I hope I made some kind of sense at least... )
Actually my point was: People can go horribly horibly wrong BUT there are also always some people who actually DO get things right!
BTW, Jay, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that Cochise project you mentioned in the NAICA podcast. May it actually really happen sometime in the hopefully not too distant future!

I too, second the opinions of those previously stated. I find wonderment in learning about other cultures and rights/acts within those cultures.
My only regret, not to have been able to physically be there to share in the experience. Especially one that celebrates life itself.

It brought a very warm and reassuring feeling to my heart that these rites go on; and are never-changing . The past is kept sacred; threaded through the present and spreads it's wings on into the future....
In this changing world of discord and strife that's upon us, it truly is a never-ending strong Fire. +

Jay,
I agree with Shay and all the other ladies that the traditions handed down from generation to generation is awesome. As in the Italian traditions, this is a cause of much celebration. The woman is the giver of life. She should bring many riches to her family.
I would very much like to see a traditional "indian courting and wedding ceremony". They are said to be beautiful and elegantly simple.
Thanks for sharing Jay!
