J.L. in South Carolina asks....
I am curious if you yourself and other Native Americans feel that
those with a little Indian blood or perhaps none have "totems" or animal "spirit guides". I have a copy of the birth certificat of my great-great grandmother who's father ( obviously my great-great-great grandfather ) was a Choctaw Indian named Cuna. The blood may be thin but from my earliest memories I have dreamed
and had a connection with horses. Horses than normally don't like humans often come to me. As crazy as it may sound, my own horse of 9 years I swear reads my mind and I his ( no, I'm not on drugs ). I have always felt a spiritual connection with horses. It seems you yourself are connected with the wolf.
What are your feelings about such beliefs even those with very distant ancestral ties? Thanks in advance. By the way......your story about Cheyenne brought tears to my eyes............She was so lucky you came along.

Hi J.L. I want to address a question you have raised that seems to come to me again and again. To be an Indian or to live like one or walk the red path is not based on your DNA. I know many tribes are bickering on how only the full bloods are true Indians and how if you look black, or half white or whatever your mix, that you cannot possibly be Indian and how half breeds or even less are not real Indians. To me every human race started off as a tribal group no matter the race or the location on Earth. Even if you are European, your ancestors lived in small tribal groups once long ago that eventually joined together and became town and cities. At the core of it all being an Indian is a way of life not the amount of DNA you carry. I know full bloods who are less of an Indian than folks who live by the teachings of the elders and to me all this finger pointing and I am more this, or you are less that, is childish and proves nothing. Be who you feel you are, that is most important! Never let others tell you what you can or cannot be. I have surprised so many folks who never thought I would make it this far and I am only beginning my journey. I have a long way to go. If you feel connected to your Indian heritage, you don't need anyone's approval to be who you already are. Be proud but you don't need a rez card or some document to be an Indian. All this in fighting makes me sad as for everything I have learned has taught me that what is really important is what is in your heart not the color of your skin or way one looks on the out side. I know we as humans need to feel that we belong but never forget no matter what race you were born to, you already belong to the human race! And yes we all have Spirit guides as long as you understand we are all Earth people.

Hi J.L. from South Carolina and welcome to Jayland. Tis true, Jay's story about Cheyenne touched our hearts

THE NINE TOTEMS
Each person has nine animal totems that walk through life with them, teaching and guiding them. These animals are found in 7 directions around your spirit: EAST, SOUTH, WEST, NORTH, ABOVE, BELOW and WITHIN. The last two animals are walking beside you at all times; your RIGHT SIDE (male) and your LEFT SIDE (feminine). They are your protectors.
The EAST totem guides you through spiritual challenges. It guards your path to illumination.
The South totem protects the child within and reminds you when to be humble and when to trust. It also helps heal your inner child.
The WEST totem leads on your path to personal truths and inner answers. It shows you the path to your goals.
The NORTH totem gives wise counsel and when to speak and when to listen. It also reminds you to be grateful for each blessing each day.
The ABOVE totem is the guardian of the Dreamtime and gives you access to other realms and dimensions. The Below totem shows you how to stay on your life path and how to stay grounded to Mother Earth.
The WITHIN totem in the protector of your sacred space. It teaches you how to find your life's joy.
The RIGHT totem protects your Male side and it is your Father protector. This animal carries your courage and warrior spirit.
The LEFT totem protects your Female side and teaches you how to nurture yourself and about relationships and mothering.
Special Helpers and Protectors
There are also animal totems which appear when you need them and stay for only the time necessary. These are helper totems. These totems have certain characteristics that you need at that time in your life or when you are ready for the lesson that they can teach you. You can also have protector totems that stay with you for many lifetimes and protect you from harm from negative and evil spirits.

Jay, I totally agree with you. It's unfortunate that we as humans can't get beyond foolish differences, I don't know if we'll ever learn but I stay prayerful and hopeful that one day we will wake up.

Well said Jay. How unfortunate that the world has to be in such a state that you STILL have to prove who you are by blood rather than by spirit. Imagine how glorious this place would be if it were the latter. Someday, perhaps, it won't be so. Until then, we just go on and spread the love to those who don't feel they need it or want it. Heh Heh
Anyway, welcome, welcome to the Tribal Familia J.L. You will find you like it here. There are many BEAUTIFUL people.

Welcome to my southern neighbor! I've always had a Spiritual conection with all God's creatures, but then in talking to people, I always start out, "especially with horses, dogs, cats, wolves, hawks, eagles, whales, dolphins, etc...." You get the picture..
I have a feeling that everyone on Jay's board here are the same way. And the feeling that your horse and you "feel each other's thoughts" is exactly that and is TRUTH. No one should even try to sway you from that! Know it in your Heart. You feel it every time you're alone together, right? So be it.
Blessings on you and your Horse!

Congratulations JL. Just wanted to add that also answered a simular question regarding "dreaming of animal spirits" a while back and you can find all the questions and his answers on the Q & A page. We have cut & pasted his answer below.
Answer for Jen - Jay Writes
Hi Jen in your question lies one of the most intriguing secrets of our unierse!? The question of Chance vs. Destiny, is it coincidence or was it meant to be. Interesting enough the word coincidence comes form the mathematical word for coexisting angles which are angles that were meant to meet, perfectly matched. So coincidence really means it was meant to be not by chance which is what it has become to mean?! I can only tell you that in dreams we are in touch with areas of the subconscious that normally lay dormant. Many times a dream may not have a literal interpretation but there are times you know exactly what it means. I had already a name for Mohawk before I rescued him and I visualized what he was going to look like. When I got him out of the shelter he did not look like my dream dog but he became the one. Yes, I believe you can get messages in your dreams but it is more important to stay open to the signs around you and you will know your answers cause they will be revealed to you. Just stay open and surrender to the law of uncertainty, stop the fears and worries and visualize what you want and pray for it, it will come to you, don't chase it, just believe....if you do this you will have found one of the most underrated principles of our Universe. Jen I know that lucky horse is dreaming of you just as you are dreaming of her. I hope you find each other soon.
Keep your dream alive...
Jay.

Hi JL, I'm usually silent on these boards but your question pulled me in. I've been told many times I can't be 'indian' because I'm not on some roll or carry a card. What matters is what is in your heart. My Grandfather told me long ago to listen to the wind and follow my inner voice, his advice has served me well. It doesn't matter how much blood is there what matters is what your heart tells you.
The other night we had a bit of a conflict, doubts were going through my mind. On the way to deal with this crisis I saw my wolf on the side of the road. It was as if he was waiting for me and from his eyes I knew things were going to be ok. The crisis is passed and all is well now. The point is it's not what others believe, it's what you believe that matters. Open your heart and mind and the rest will come. Take gentle care of you

Hey there JL
As usual Jay says it all.
Thanks for the totem thing too RRF.
We should talk.
Since I turned my life to walking the Red Path which was told to me by someone I met through Ebay who goes to powwows and made me Cheyenne moccasins,I have become of interest to the male persuasion and am loving my effect on people. I just love people.
Just smile.
Getting a Pocohontas style outfit too, already wear a Peter Pan one.
I am the "little Indian" child spirit.
Since I have connected to that spirit entirely, and am living on salsas, people say that their usually cautious canine companions, with other strangers, are coming right to me and they are surprised.
I look more Native skinned every day.
I have bees, and ladybugs, and all of nature at my fingertips and my flowers even respond to me.
I feed many birds outside and I talk to them, and have special fondness for the Red headed woodpecker, the jaybirds of course, cardinals, eagles, and ospreys.
We have them all here.
And squirrels. I learn from them.
They are good teachers.
I am planting my earth for Nature and it slowly is becoming God's playground.
It is also my sacred space and a sacred place. All land is.
Our stories teach one another.
The moon, stars, clouds and sun all have lessons if we listen to them.
Going to sit in sun right now.
Take care and know the spirit cares for all of us.
Thanks for sharing that with us.
Just prooves the oneness of being we have.
One last crazy observation
I just saw Escape from Grizzly Mountain, with Jay in it,and I do believe that there are places on this planet that are magic.
Special sacred places of our ancestors and one day I may disappear like in the movie and go to that past or other dimension where they still live without modern conveniences, unchanged and I will live among them with a horse and wolf.
I always wanted a horse too.
What did you think of Hidalgo?
