I like Jay's character Swimmer, although I would have loved to see that character have some more dialogue with Jude Law's Inman role.
I especially enjoyed the battle scenes, as Swimmer charging the enemy with all his power and might in a bloody battle.

Like most of us Jaybirds we all wish we had seen more of 'Swimmer' in this film. But Jay's role I think, was significant in itself. As an African-American I thought it was rather poignant how Swimmer and the Black union soldier ended up fighting each other face to face. The look they gave each other was one of a 'what are you doing here?' kind of look. The scene didn't last long but you can't help but think equality was certainly not a reality after the civil war, for former slaves or Native peoples. We know that after the war those same union soldiers (including Buffalo soldiers) were sent out west to fight indigenous people and segregation/violence toward former slaves became the norm. So Jay's role was important and I'm glad the director chose to use that scene in the movie. -Peace
