I believe this may be my favorite Jay picture. The jury is still out on that. But his portrayal of Kayitah was breathtaking. I'm a western fan so I was sold on the story and love Tommy Lee Jones so that was an extra plus. But when Jay came on the scene, it was all him. He played the Apache warrior and father with great depth and passion. Again, it was very obvious that he did his homework and really got into his character. He brought Kayitah to life, a great credit to the Apache people he was representing. Again because of his strong sceen presence, he was able to stand with the likes of Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett. He continues to grow as an actor and continues to impress me.

Don't hardly know where to start, so will try for piece by piece, Part I, Part II the Sequel,...
I had wanted to see 'The Missing' when it was out in the theatres, but time or money got in the way. It would have been some kind of beutiful to see it on the big screen with New Mexico and Salvatorre's (sp?) photography.
Finally got to see it on cable, and was awed by it. When i see Jay Tavare portray Kayitah, i don't see Jay Tavare, i see Kayitah. The movie was, in itself, of total - now this is where i get stumped, i have yet to find words to describe it, but all good -, but Jay made it even more so. Not just because he is a good looking man, which isn't my fault, so don't blame me, but of the representation of Kayitah. It was like someone had stepped out of time.
Jay's work in the movie made me take even more interest in it, to find out, understand, and learn more. I have read some unfavorable reviews of 'The Missing', but i can laugh about it, and wonder if the reviewers had really seen the movie, or followed along with it. In years to come, i think the movie will be looked back on as a landmark, milestone film.
I am expecially proud of the care than was taken to speak Apache, and representing the Apache. Again, i've read the reviews that basically said the movie portrayed Amer. Indians / Native Amer. in a bad, stereotyped light. But, I have also read of the response of the Apache People themselves, which was more than good, and to me that is the bottom line. Brought pride to The People.
more to say, but will close for now, with much appreciation,
sharon

OK, so here i am back with Part II, lol.
Of course, after seeing Jay as Kayitah, like a lot of other people, i'm wondering, "WHO is that guy?". Which leads me to watch the other movies out around the same time, 'Adaptation', and 'Cold Mountain'. I was so amazed and wondered, "Is this the same guy, or someone completely different??" 'The Missing' and 'Adaptation' came out within a year or so of each other. But between the two characters he played, there seemed to be an age difference of at least 10-15 years, and not done by make up. Kayitah, a mature father, somewhere in 35 + to 40 range i guessed. And Mathew Oceola seemed like about 24 with a young man's attitude appropriate for that age. lol I have to look really hard to see if that is Jay Tavare, or some other man. Maybe should ask to see some i.d.
stay tuned, sharon

Something about The Missing that really bothered me! Jay Tavare's name is not mentioned on the DVD jacket anywhere, at least not that I saw. I felt that his performance as Kayitah was so brilliant, he deserved mentioning! I'd love to see him cast in leading roles, he is an incredibly versatile actor. Just a brief vent, sorry folks darkwolfhowls
