Hi Jaybirds and Jaygents!
I thought it would be wonderful to share an event several dozen teachers for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), had the privilege to experience a few weeks ago. Mr. Jay Tavare was invited to speak to a group of teachers here in the Los Angeles area about his knowledge and experiences not only as an outstanding actor and storyteller, but as a man of American Indian and Latin descent.
The district offers a mandatory course to credentialed teachers which emphasizes multicultural education and issues of diversity. Los Angeles is a multicultural Mecca with a student population that is a very diverse "melting pot" . Jay was invited to be a guest speaker for one of the class sessions because of his experience playing and doing extensive research for his numerous roles in several exceptional films. His reputation for storytelling and sharing knowledge is not only well known but indeed well deserved! Jay spoke of his experiences as a multiethnic person , but also as a man who uses each character he plays (Waka Mani, Kayitah, Swimmer and Matthew Osceola to name a few) as opportunities to learn and grow. Needless to say, he was a big hit! Numerous questions were asked and Jay skillfully shared an abundance of cultural and historical information with the class.
Overall it was a huge success! Teachers, who are so influential in the lives of our children, learned much that evening in such a short period of time. Most likely, Jay's contribution will not only affect how the teachers present will approach their diverse student population, but how the students themselves will benefit from what their teachers pass on to them . I was not only lucky enough to witness this unselfish act of community service but also had the pleasure to see women of all ages and walks of life gasp when Jay walked into the classroom-LOL! At the end of the presentation Jay received thunderous applause from everyone of the teachers regardless of gender. Seriously, the teachers were very impressed for many reasons-so was the instructor of the class who truly hopes this won't be the last time LAUSD benefits from the graciousness of Mr. Jay Tavare.
Reporting from sunny Southern California, until next time, this is C.V.

That`s a great program for keeping the teachers informed about our diverse cultures. We can all learn from the past but to learn what`s going in terms of current life can change attitudes and open up new ideas. And you never know when something is going to make a difference no matter how small it might be. I can also see Jay making a great big splash in that group. What a great way to give of your time, Jay!

All I can say is, "Wow"! First of all, Jay, thank you for such a selfless act of giving your time to help teachers to teach others better. As usual, that was generous of you. Second, thank you for sharing this experience with us Clarie! Whoo! I could only imagine the gasps around the room when he entered. I would have loved to have been there, just to hear the reactions and the whispers. I probably would have fell out laughing, since that is exactly what I did when I first saw Jay in Street Fighter! Hmmm, lets see. . . what did I say??? Oh yeah, I remember. . . "*GASP!!* OOOOh my God, he's good looking!!!" ROFLOL! *chortle*
Holler!

This does not surprise me. Jay is a very generous man. If he could change but a few attitudes and open some minds the changes could be endless. I would love to hear him speak sometime.

Hey Claire!
Thanks for that wonderful news on Jay's speaking engagement. There is no doubt that Jay is a speaker. When he speaks everyone wants to listen, from young to old alike, you can bank on it!
I myself was in awe as he spoke to our group at the JTTP2. He is definitely a facinating man. Like, I said several months ago, in a poem I wrote, he is the "Incomparable Jay Tavare."
I'm sure that the kids as well as the teachers, would love to have him come again!

That is so awesome! Jay continually proves that He not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He is a shining example of humility and grace. Just knowing that he and people like him exist makes the world a brighter place to be.

Jay had visited my teacher credentialing class in August (DR. Fuller's class).
Jay shared bits of his life with the class and then shared some of his views about the world, life and his experiences.
It was touching.
Would love to chat with you more Jay.
I am the one who spoke to you after class for a spell. I had found an arrowhead when i was younger......
