Hey Jay Tavare Fans!
The following was submitted by the instructor of a class for graduate level teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District designed to help those teaching our children to be as culturally competent and sensitive as possible.
On February 11th, Jay spoke to a large group of teachers. He did something quite similar last year. This year the group was three times the size due to the overwhelming response last year. Please read , enjoy and be very proud. I know I am!

Jay Has Done It Again!
Responding to a request for a repeat performance, Jay the actor, historian and emerging activist mesmerized an audience of over one hundred graduate level Los Angeles Unified School District teachers in training. Once again he held the group of very special teachers in awe as he shared his experiences walking between and across cultural borders personally and professionally. Questions from the enthusiastically engaged group, all of whom had put in a full day of teaching, elicited responses from Jay that displayed his tremendous range of historical and cultural knowledge. Describing how he researched for each role that he has portrayed in the movies Jay emphasized that he constantly and consistently reaches for authenticity and the dismantling of stereotypes.
Comments to the course instructors after the class were unanimously positive. Such as, “I felt an expansion of my knowledge of American History, things I was not exposed to in school”; “ I had no knowledge of the post civil war relations between American Indians and African Americans”. Written evaluations were equally, if not more, positive in their comments and recommendations that the next cohort of education specialist teachers in training who are committed to teaching students who almost always are required to “walk between and across cultural, social and language borders have the benefit of Jay’s articulate, intelligent and entertaining presentation. Of course the expected comments from the females were the same as always “He is so gorgeous!”
In the model set by Sir Ian McKellen, Edward James Olmos and a few others Jay is giving, pro bono, to his community in the most valuable way; enriching the lives of our most precious resource, the children of today, the American citizenry of tomorrow.

Just wanted to second what everybody else has already said - I think it's great that you keep sharing your time and your knowledge like that, Jay, and I sure wish I could be among those lucky (teachers turned) students!

This is a wonderful thing that Jay is doing for teachers and students. Being a teacher myself, I am very greatful for those who take the time to help improve education. By the way, I think our students here in my area would benefit from hearing about Jay's experiences because we are somewhat isolated, and we have a unique culture of our own that brings with it stereotypes. Teachers and students can benefit from those who can share their culture, their experiences, and their work. We have so many students that are undecided about the things they want to do that they choose the wrong path.
