Hello to All...
The American Indian Film Institute held its 31st Annual American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco, CA all of last week, beginning with their Opening Night on Friday, Nov 3. Myself & some fellow Jaybirds had a week of film treats with a variety of films genres, from documentaries...to short films...to movies. This wonderful learning experience was culminated with the American Indian Motion Picture Awards Show on Sat, Nov 11, at the Palace of Fine Arts. Our very own Jay Tavare acted as a presenter at the awards show, and he was in great form with his handsome suave self. (I say he should have hosted the show. LOL)
Mr. Michael Smith, who is the head of the Film Institute and Festival was very welcoming to us, as were all of the great folks who work with him to put on such a memorable event. A special shout out to Brian and Mike (the younger one).
Fontenel, RRF, ClaireV, Linda and myself got to meet another fan from the forum, Eastern Bird, who lives in San Francisco. But wait…there’s more…we all got to meet and spend some time with Jay! (WOOHOO!!!) For Linda, Eastern Bird, and myself this was our first time meeting Jay, and I want THANK him from the bottom of my heart for being so warm and gracious. We also want to THANK Denise, a friend of Jay’s that we also got to meet at the awards show, who gave us complimentary tickets to her trade Spa show where she was one of the venders.
Last, but not least a special THANKS to ClaireV’s cousin ElsieMae of Berkley, CA, who fixed us a beautiful delicious southern Sunday diner after the Spa show just like we were all family, and so now we are. (We rolled out of cousin ElsieMae’s and on to the airport. LOL)
Christi
p.s.
I just heard that Pier lives in San Francisco.
Pier, I wish I would have known so that we could have met, and made sure that you were right their with us at the awards show where you could have met Jay. You’re a lovely soul, and I hope we do get to meet some day soon.

Hello to all! This past week in San francisco have been filled with good spirits. I live in this city so I got to see most of the films, which was WONDERFUL. I was so happy to also meet other fans or Jay birds, with their warm and open smiles.
But the icing on the cake was meeting "Jay" he is as handsome as handsome is inside and out; Not only did I meet Jay and his friend Denise, I sat with them both throughout the whole "Awards Show."
Now ladies how good is that ? After the show I had to run before twelve midnight, my time as "Cinderella"
was almost over. hahahahahaa WHAT A NIGHT IT WAS!!!!

Hello out there in Jayland.
Yes we enjoyed a fun-filled, exciting, and enlightening time at the AI Film Festival during the week of its showing. I really enjoyed all the documentaries, film shorts, and feature length films. One of my favorite part of the festival was the “Tribal Touring Program” in which there were film shorts by the youth from several different tribes thru-out the US. It was so great to see the creativity from the minds of our youth and they definitely have a bright future ahead.
Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make this whole event a success and congratulations to the nominees and the winners .
Special shout-out to the staff & artists that we had the pleasure of meeting, greeting and partying with at the after-party, , Michael Spears, Michael Horse, Robert Guthrie, Dakota House, Brian Spencer, Andrea Menard, Yellow Thunder Women (I loved the two songs you performed), Mike (Co-Host at the Festival), just to name a few. I agree with Christi that it would have been awesome for to host the whole award show. For more info on this event, please go to www.aifisf.com. Also thank you to Denise for the tickets to the Beauty Spa Convention. Easternbird it was nice to meet you.
Last but certainly never least, thank you again to for always being the humble person that you are. you are like no other

My Pics from the Film Fest...
Although I didn't see every thing here are my favs:
"Good Night Irene"
A short film that takes place at a free clinic with three main characters (Irene, an elder woman, and two young men). It's witty and charming, and was nominated in the short film category.
"Expiration Date"
A feature length movie about a young man who is about to turn 25, and belives his family is cursed because both his grandfather and father died at the ages of 25 by getting hit by a milk truck. (yes, it's a comedy, LOL) Robert Guthrie who is the young actor who plays the main character was also one of the three character in "Good Night Irene". Robert won Best Actor for Expiration Date, and the movie won for Best Movie. When I went up to Robert and told him how much I enjoyed both films he got really excited, and said "You saw both of them!" LOL
"Seasoned With Spirit"
www.nativetelecom.org/program_sws.html
A PBS cooking show: two episodes were shown.
The host is an American Indian chef who shares a wealth of food/cultural knowledge, both current and historical. One of the episodes shown was about the Houma Indians of Louisiana. Hey you know what...a lot of so called Cajun food is really Houma. Taught to the Cajuns by the Houma, which helped the Cajuns survive after they arrived there. Now I've got to try to get the recipies!

Great job reporting Red. I plan to continue going(3rd year in a row) not because it's such a great experience but because I continue to learn about a part of me-my Indian heritage. I am very proud of that.
It was so much fun to have company this year-the Jaybirds were quite a hit. My only disappointment was not seeing Gordon Tootoosis this year along with Tantoo Cardinal-but Jay being present made up for that. Mr. Tavare-I agree-you would do an outstanding job hosting!!!
Denise-you are one cool, hard working, pretty lady and it was a pleasure meeting you!
