Shuandalyn Writes...
Hiya Jay! How are you? I hope you had a great Thanksgiving if you celebrate it!
My questions are:
Since you are a screenwriter, is there a timetable for writing screenplays?
What exactly does screenwriting entail developing characters?
Do you have to research a topic before writing a screenplay?
Thanks for your time Jay! Love ya! Peace!
Jay Writes...
Hi Shuandalyn, Nesh Ta Gol Teh(How is it with you?).
Screen writing is an art form. When you write a novel, you have no boundaries but a screen play must tell the story you want to tell in about 105 pages. That is the standard nowadays. You can write longer plays but if you want people to read them than the length of your story is as important as the content. I usually write a synopsis of the story I want to tell. It is only a guide or a vague outline. I try to write at least 3-5 pages a day. If I get in the zone than I write untill my creative juices run out. I read or watch or even travel to the locations and consume as much material as I can before I start and focus my mind on the topic completely. It is amazing when you focus on something, suddenly everything around you make sense in a different way and you will find your answers everywhere. I am better at story structure but I have worked hard to create characters that see the world from different view points and you will always need conflict to drive the scene forward. Ultimately a good Screenwriter must think like a director and vision the scenes in his mind's eye and write in the genre that the story takes place. Funny writing for comedy, and dramatic expressions for Drama, and so on. I usually play a song that fits the scene I have in mind and try to write the type of films I like to see on the silver screen.
I wish you happiness in the new year.
Jay.

Hi Shuandalyn-up of the floor yet??? (smile). You/we are so lucky to be able to get such a sincere response from someone so busy as Jay. You go girl!!!
Your question was an excellent one. Are you interested in writing yourself? Do you ever attend any of the local film festivals where you live? Here in LA there is a great Pan African Film Festival. I try to attend every year- always takes place during February (Black History month). If you are ever out this way you should check it out.
I know you are having a great weekend after hearing from "You Know Who" yesterday. Catch ya later

Hey ladies! I'm still on cloud 9 and I won't be getting off any time soon. Jay has really made my weekend! Thank you again Jay! I didn't get much sleep last night because I was and still is excited!
Claire, the town in which I live is too small. We don't have film festivals here but it would be a good suggestion to the chamber of commerce and dept of tourism. I want to write novels and I'm checking schools in my area to see if they have a great English dept so I can take writing courses. The movie Adaptation sparked my curiosity about the writing process of films. It is very interesting! If things go according to plan, who knows!? I could be the next Susan Orlean! But Jay would be first choice to turn my books into movies! This forum was also a good place for me to start! Alright, I feel a swoon coming again!

I have a good friend-actually distant relation who has written some great books and teaches creative writing, formerly at Cal State University@ Los Angeles, now a local community college-he also writes in the editorial section of the LA times.
His name is Jervey Tervalon and has written "Understand This" about growing up in South Central Los Angeles (gang central), "Dead Above Ground" a murder mystery taking place in New Orleans which actually tells the tale of his aunt's murder and his latest book "Lita" about his mom's struggle to be accepted as a "light almost white" black woman dealing with racism, just to name a few.
If you like I could send you autographed copies-Jervey is a very talented writer and great guy. I think right know he is working on a screenplay for a movie. He loves to encourage other writers. Let me know.....

Hey Claire,
How cool. I wrote down the name of your relative. I'm going to locate his books. His stuff seems interesting.
Would/could that encouragement lend itself this way too
Remember, My niece who was hospitalized? Oh by the way, thanks for your encouragment, and offer of information about the disease. She was released from the hospital only a few days ago.
Anyway, her mom is cousins with Antwoine Fisher of "Finding Fish" fame. It was really cool when they were here filming the movie with Denzel Washington. Our family was invited to the set, and to meet Denzel. Everybody went, except me. Okay, I'm weird, I know, but there was so many people clamoring to meet Denzel, and all I wanted to do was talk to Antwoine. Then I had to work.
I have to give my sister-in- law props on the fact that she is avery open person, and gets along well with everyone. Her, and Antoine got along great!! Out of all the *newfound family members, they remain in good contact, speaking to each other often.
He has been back her many times, speaking at schools, book signings etc...,and they always get together , but I have yet to meet him.
So she offered to introduce us byway of a three-way phone call, since I'm aspiring writer as well, I will take all the inspiration, and info. I can get!
Still, weird again, a little nervous, I keep putting it off. She tells me, she's just going to call me up, and have him on line, so when I least expect it.
Apparently, he too is working on a new screenplay, a comedy with his good friend, Chris Tucker.

Hi Dazzle-good to hear from you and I'm glad your niece is back home.
I've never met Denzel but I have friends who have. They say he is very friendly and down to earth with a good sense of humor-somewhat like someone else we all know(J.T.). Take your sis-in-laws advice and talk to Antoine-you have nothing to lose and everything to gain-people are people. I found his story very moving-loved the movie and watch it whenever it comes on (though it really makes me cry sad and happy tears.
I'd be happy to ask Jervey for some autographed books for you as well. We met in my clinic- started talking about New Orleans because our families are from there and turns out that my Aunt is related to his family-small world. If you e-mail me your address I'll get them to you.
I've strated a novel on my laptop-moving slowly and my sisters and I are collaborating on what we hope will be a screenplay. Hear from you soon?

I also would like to learn how a write can combine his or her influences when writing.
