Claire Asks...
Hi Jay,
What words of encouragement would you have for children who need "real" life heroes? You seem like the kind of person children would love-they have a sixth sense when it comes to goodness and spirit?
Thanks-C.V.
Jay Writes...
Hi Claire, You know that song... "I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way"... That is one of my favorite songs and it really says alot. Kids nowadays grow up real fast and we can try to guide them but ultimately they must decide for themselves.
One of my favorite poets, Kahlil Gibran said it best when he wrote..."Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. "
In the tradition of several Indian Tribes, the elders advice the young mothers to keep a few years between the kids, sometimes as much as 5-6 years so the one child can get the full attention that they deserve before the next child is born and this way it also eliminates the rivalry between them. Not bad thinking for so called Noble Savages! LOL.
If I was to give any advice I would teach them Self Discipline which would then empower them to achieve whatever their young hearts desire. Self discipline kept me away from abusing myself with drugs and other temptations that were available to me while I was growing up. For me the real super Hero in a child's life is "The Mother" who has one of the hardest jobs in the world. A father is important, too but they are more like Robin were the Mom is Batman! Teach them to find their passion and then encourge them to work everyday to improve and to stay with it and allow the rest to come to them.

You know, while I was standing next to Sami with her fire sticks, it occurred to me that if I was her parent(and am old enough to be), I was condoning her fire affliction. But, to carry the scenario a little farther, we were together and as long as no prairie nearby went up in smoke, we were ok. I`ve also been watching BARKING MAD on ANIMAL PLANET where they`re talking about rewarding the positive behavior and dropping the confusing signals that promote the bad. I`ve been thinking lately that alot of people don`t know what really constitutes good and bad behavior. One of Dazzle`s ex-teacher stories makes me think that. Dazzle, you`re going to have to start posting at BATMOM-----at least once. Claire, enjoy Jay`s answer!

Nice answer and so true. Self discipline was taught to me at a young age by my first Judo teacher. I didn't want to meditate, I wanted to flip other kids! LOL I didn't understand the principle at the time but it stuck with me none the less. I also learned it just from being the last of six children. Believe me, you learn patience and independence in a household as big as mine was! LOL

Amen to that sista! Jay, if you are still around and reading this! Man, you really are awesome! You rock the Kasbah! You and your Batman lovin self! Grin.
I'm definitely gonna have to print out a copy of the poem and post it on my bulletin board at the campus. Grin. If that's ok of course. Grin. The outreach school I teach at have kids not even 12 raising their own brothers and sisters. One girl, she's going to be 13 next week, brings her baby sister with her to the animation class because her parents can't afford to stay at home and don't have enough money to put the baby into a daycare. And it's a total role reversal where the daughter does all the things that the mother does while the mother and father go out to work. I mean, it's out of neccesity that the daughter takes care of the baby, but it's still sad to see that happening. It wigs me out cuz the daughter is missing out on her childhood. That's the main reason why I decided to teach her without pay, it's cuz it's something fun that she enjoys and I don't mind helping out with the baby when she's working and when I'm not busy. It works out. But yeah, when coming to the USA, I found culture here so different. Mothers in Japan mostly stayed at home until the child is older like in high school. So whenever a child came home from school, the mother was always around and made sure that they got their homework done and all that hooplah. Most kids in Japan don't get their first part time job until they are in senior year of high school. Here I find that kids start working really young.
And yeah, Barbara, I do get a bit silly around fireworks. tee hee. But at least I'm smart enough not to get burned...Grin. Tee hee.
Jay, you rock the kasbah! You are definitely someone to admire...and not just for your looks. Grin. Super cool!

Hi Jay!
Just got back this am(Big Bear)from a much needed respite-having some personal(break-up) issues so I thought it would be better to "lick my wounds" in beautiful surroundings-play in some snow and enjoy life's beauty. Wow this was just what I needed!!!
You are so right. I look at my children and know they are on loan. My most important job is to raise them right and then let them "fly". My mom raised 7 of us-she along with my Dad are my biggest heroes. I tell any young person "the sky is the limit-just know it may be a struggle getting there but it's definitely worth the journey".
I love Kahlil Gibran, always words of wisdom and beauty. I'm going to share the elders wisdom with my mom -eventhough it's a little too late(smile).
Thank you so much for answering my question-you never cease to amaze me/us with your insight and candor. Luv ya Jay and know that you are never alone. (smile)

OK you guys.... I'm still in a state of bliss(smile)!! Even though I need to sleep and my schedule is really full this morning I have an ubelivable smile on my face ( booyah). Thanx again Jay (it's just now sinking in ladies).
I knew you would be the perfect person to ask because of your love for "The Never Ending Story"-I saw it at least 3 times in the theater. Kids, by fault of us adults, are growing up too fast-we have to help them slow it down by being more responsible for our actions-hence being a real parent.
I agree with the rest of the crew- you have the right stuff to be a great Dad! BTW, the visual of my mom as Batman and my Dad as Robin (tights, capes and all) has me crackin up-but you hit the nail on the head with that analogy.
Have a beautiful week!!

Hey Jay and everyone,
Great answer to Claire's question. Growing up I hated being the youngest because all I wanted was to 'hang out' with my siblings but they wouldn't let me (they're a lot older than me, except one,we were a year apart). My mom was always there to give me something to do, she's the one who taught me to be patient, not be a follower and work for what I want because it's not gonna drop in my lap. I follow her advice to this day.

Your question was a great , I have been thinking about that very same thing trying to be a positive role model for all the ones that look up to you. In my line of work it's get harder and harder everyday to have the little ones to respect you as a person. I agree with Jay that MOMS holds it all together....To all the Mothers please don't stop being that light in your childs eyes .
On a personal note stop licking your wounds his lost you is a great person I get good vibes always from you it come from your heart . We all have been down that road a time or two. OOOOh, Toosie,
I don't know . . . .do you really want to know?!??
Hmmm. Maybe I can comb the questions that I asked her to see if there are any questions that I asked her that haven't been addressed to this forum yet. When I asked her all the questions that I had, I had asked them before the site was created. She said that she would go over some of my questions with Jay and see which ones he wanted to include on the site, like a facts sheet. Between the "10 things you didn't know about Jay" and the questions that everyone has asked Jay already, I think most of them have been covered, except maybe a few. Again, I'll look and see if there were some questions that haven't been stated/ asked to the group and I'll try to stick them up here. I had entirely too much fun just finding out all of the things that I have been wanting to know about him for so long! It was a great experience!

Well, Toosie. . .
Just as I thought. I combed back through the questions and all of them were questions that K.R. said that she and Jay would consider putting on the site, which she did. The ones that have not been put on the site have been asked by Tribe members. As I re-read over my questions, I am truly amazed at how many of them are directly on the site or hinted about, especially the "10 Things You Didn't Know About Jay" section.
As an African American with distant Native heritage, I was particulary fond of the answer I received to one of the many questions that I asked K.R. about Jay's dating preferences.
I asked K.R. this: "In the spirit of 'UnBowed', I have three questions. . . . (2) Assuming Jay is still single, has he ever dated someone who was not Native American, as in White, Hispanic, Black, or Asian?" . . . K.R.'s response, in 2002, was this: (I really hope she doesn't kill me for this, but here goes!) "Yes, Jay is unattached right now. You might say he is an 'equal opportunity employer' in the sense that he loves all cultures. For dating, I know he prefers more exotic women like African American, Hispanic, and also likes combos such as 1/2 Black and 1/2 Hispanic or 1/2 Hawaiian and 1/2 something else or you know, combinations that are unique, but I do know he adores all types of women from Black, White, Brown, Red. . . . Don't get me wrong, he thinks women like Michelle Pfeiffer and Charlize Theiron are gorgeous, but I've always seen him attracted to darker women. . . . "
Can anyone imagine the cartwheeles that I did when I read that!!! I was an insufferable, gigling mess for the rest of the day. My sisters were giving me the Evil Eye of Consternation all day!!! I just think it's neat that our Chief likes his "chocolate" in the movies and in real life!!! Hhmmmwwwaaahhaaa!!!!

As for me ... I am about as white as you can get. I have the majority of the scottish/english features that run through my family. The only feature I received from my American Indian great great grandfather is the high cheekbones. So for me I am at the opposite end of the high since I am not considered "exotic!"
My sister, Janine, would be considered "exotic" as she has beautiful olive skin, dark shiny brown hair and brown eyes. She is absolutely beautiful and even after having 8 kids she is still stunningly beautiful! Janine and her oldest daughter, Kirsten, look American Indian.

(smile)

Hi Claire! Sorry that I'm a day late and a dollar short on congradulating you for Jay's response to your question. Way to go! Great question!
Jay, thanks for the great answer! You never cease to amaze me! You're truly an inpsiration to all people regardless of race, age, sex and religion! I wish you continued success and happiness!

Claire:
Your question was a great , I have been thinking about that very same thing trying to be a positive role model for all the ones that look up to you. In my line of work it's get harder and harder everyday to have the little ones to respect you as a person. I agree with Jay that MOMS holds it all together....To all the Mothers please don't stop being that light in your childs eyes .
On a personal note stop licking your wounds his lost you is a great person I get good vibes always from you it come from your heart . We all have been down that road a time or two. Like to old saying goes you can't live without them and you can't kill them either LOL..So here a big hug from me to you. You take care my sista...

Thanks Fontenel
Some folks don't truly appreciate someone until they are no longer available. It's now time to go about the business of living and something good will fall into my lap or vice versa (smile).
Jay--- the same goes for you brothah-only a matter of time---

You know what's the most annoying Claire, I have run out of questions to ask Jay for this forum. I had a whole page of questions about Jay but I asked them all to K.R. an associate of his. I am going to have to really think hard to come up with some more questions for our Chief.
Anyway, congrats on coming up with such a neat question and also for pulling such a unique answer out of The Chief.

Miss Davis: I am glad to hear that you are still soaring high.

AAWWWW Toosie,
Take heart! Like my email said, he does find beauty in women like Michelle Phieffer and the like. It doesn't mean that he is allergic to blondes or anything like that. K.R. just told me that he is fond of brown women. Who knows! As fun as you are, you could be the one that could change his mind! There is always a first time for eveything! Hmmwwaahhaaaa!!! Keep hope alive! Whoo-Hoo!!
Holler!
