Christi Asks...
Hi Jay,
Earlier you said you were working on a screenplay based on a historical event. Can you say what it is, and once you write a screenplay what do you have to do to get someone to use it? Thanks for you time!
Christi.
Jay Writes...
Hi Christi, there are several ways to approach a Screenplay. You could write a synopsis and then see if a production company is interested which is usually not that easy, most people want to see the finished product. When you write an original script it's called a "Speck Script." If its based on a book, an event, or an article it's an Adaptation. If you have written a "Hot Script" and you really believe in it, then the first thing is not to show it to anyone! LOL. Try to approach a literary agent and see if he or she is willing to represent you. You could also find an entertainment attorney and let him handle it. Whatever company you send it to, you must accompany your screenplay with a cover sheet from your attorney and date it. Who got it? How long they had it? So you can protect yourself. You can even ask for their coverage which could be helpfull. Now the danger is that you cannot safeguard an idea. Alot of times they may steal some aspect of your screenplay if they want but you must take that risk if you want to sell it. Also before you send it out, you should register it at WGA which is the Writers Guild of America, and for a small sum you can date the register and print it on the title sheet of your Screenplay.
It all starts with you getting passionate about a story and then writing it. There are courses you can take to improve your skills and as well as reading screenplays that have been made into films could really help you to understand what you are up against.
Based on what I just told you I can not tell you anything about my screenplay at least not on this Forum. I wish you all the inspiration in the world.
Jay.

Gees, it seems like getting someone to use your screenplay is the cut throat part of the screenplay biz. I hope someone picks up your screen play and you are able to use all your creative abilities freely.

I have already written down some of the things you said to do. First thing is I have to find out if I can actually write, and can I write a screenplay I do have some story ideas, but as you say, I won't mention what they are. hehehe
I LOVE YOU MADLY J.T. Thanks again.

Almost forgot to say thanks for the taking the time to answer questions. This proves you're one in a million, endearing you to your 'tribe' even moreso , if that's possible.
Kudos to giving us all the technical info, and the step by step. A while ago, I decided that one of the projects I am working on is, probably to much for a book, but would shine as a film . Never thought i'd be considering something like that ....oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained .
I do remember hearing that you're not allowed to read anyone else's screenplay either, now I understand why.
Be well , 'Ray of Sun' Tavare
