Director Steven Spielberg had narrowed down each role for Into the West to 2-3 choices. But after seeing Jay in action, there was no one else; "Chief Prairie Fire" was Jay Tavare! Then, after viewing the scenes between "Chief Prairie Fire" and the acclaimed actress, Keri Russell, who played "Naomi," Mr. Spielberg ordered 5-6 additional scenes.
Jay's most memorable scene was the final battle scene where "Chief Prairie Fire" dies an honorable Warrior death defending his family and tribe. However, it was cut due solely to the fact that this episode already had so many death scenes that Mr. Spielberg felt it would be best to leave the love story at a point that displayed hope, love and a future for these young lovers. I couldn't agree more!
Jay learned Cheyenne for his dead on portrayal of "Chief Prairie Fire."

Nesh-Ta-Gol-Teh...(hello or how is it with you) to all the beautiful people on this forum. I want to tell you about my time on the set of the Into The West. To start with I must say that the locations around Calgary are breathtakingly beautiful. The first time I drove past the Cheyenne encampment I knew this production was on an epic scale. What else could one expect from Mr. Spielberg? He is a visionary and a great soul and he has assembled an awesome team to tell for the first time and without sugar coating it the story of the West and all the heart aches and bravery that our ancestors must have had to survive in the harshest of conditions. "Migration" is the second of the 6 films but we are shooting it first. Simon Wincer is a wonderful and talented director with a great sense of humor and I truly am lucky to be working with him. He understands the Westerns and was raised in Australia with horses and open spaces and has an uncanny ability to capture the feel of the period. The cast is hand picked and I loved working with Keri Russell, she is a talented and giving actor who is fearless and I enjoyed my time with her tremendously. Matthew Settle and Skeet Ulrich are two bright and talented young men and I had fun just hanging with them. The Natives in my tribe were beautiful and I have a really good looking tribe, even if I say so myself LOL. And it makes me think it's good to be the Chief. Our Canadian crew was professional and easy to work with. Especially the Hair and make up, Llowe Flewlling, the key hair and her team Chris Harrison, Heather Smith and Penny Thompson had done their homework and all the different tribes that are within the story are researched to great degree, right down to how the Koo feathers were cut and placed on the Warriors Scalp Lock. I was impressed as normally I am the one who must help to get the historic accuracy but they needed no help.
I believe you will enjoy this film and most likely the entire series. I wish all of you a great Indian Summer and Nen-dos-Talsh.(see you again)
