RRF Asks...
Jay, I recently attended a "Chi for Beginners" class and truly enjoyed it (the movements and the flow of energy). Although I intend to get into it and learn more about it, I would like your point of view. My question is, Do you practice Tai Chi and if so do you incorporate it in with your Martial Arts training OR is Tai Chi already incorporated in the Martial Arts Practice as a whole?
Thank you for your input.
Jay Writes...
Hi Running Red Fox, hope you are well. I have studied Tai Chi and Chi Gong which uses the body's Chi by focusing it on one spot. The only Martial Arts I practice from time to time now days is to take one of the Jet's advance classes. We use to do a class at Johnny Cusack's place in Venice and you never knew who was going to show up. Every one was equal once you were in class and you had full contact rounds with the likes of Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon Lee, John McEnroe, or any number of World Class Kickboxers who would assist him in this grueling 2 hour class. Just like the Tai Chi the main purpose of the class was to tune in with your opponents energy and fight him as he fights you. Match his tempo and rhythm so to speak. This was also a good improve lesson for me as an actor, by keeping my senses sharp. I think anytime you learn something new, it is a blessing. I wish you a joyous Happy Birthday.
Jay.

Hi Jay, you have truly made my birthday a memberable one. Thank you soooo much for your input and for your birthday wishes.
I can see you now matching your opponent's tempo and rhythm. We all know you gave your opponent a run for their money because you are always on top of your game.
I agree that any time you learn something new it is a blessing.

What a great question and answer. I have no idea what the difference is between the two martial arts but I am sure it takes a lot of physical ability and patience.
One of my former supervisors taught Pilates and Kickboxing. She said that they both were excellent and were for different disciplines.
As always, it is good to hear from Jay!

Hey Jay,
Very interesting !!!!
That's a class I would Love to sit in on. My Martial Arts skill is no where at that level.
For my rank, I'm good, but smart enough to know when to sit, look , listen and learn .
Besides, since that car accident, my back and body have been doing interesting things - no training.
My son's Seifu has suggested "Tai Chi' as a way to direct the negative energy.
It would be real nice to study again and with my little peep.
Jay I don't know how you mangae it, but your answers are always timely, informative, and helpful.
Take care, Jay
RRF ...Woman hope you had a great day !!!

Hello Jay, I read this quote and automatically thought of you in the classes of “full contact rounds.” you mentioned you attend from time to time.
“The ability to be calm, confident, and decisive in crisis is not an inherited characteristic but is the direct result of how well the individual has prepared himself for the battle.”
